According to Parker, there are plenty of ways to set up your island to encourage interaction between family and guests, from seating on one side of the island to placing chairs on either side for face-to-face conversation. “Whether you choose one, two, three or four-sided seating around the island, Houzz kitchen designers recommend allowing 24 to 30 inches of counter width per guest,” says Parker, adding, “You should also consider the length of your counter overhang to maximize knee room and maybe add a bar-style foot rail to support the feet.”
