Historic charm and rustic atmosphere
The plan for this country carriage house on a 45-acre farm in Bedford, New York, was to “keep it cozy and rustic,” says ELLE DECOR A-list designer Virginia Tapker. Of course, that vibe extends to the kitchen, where the shelving is made from reclaimed wood found on the farm, the floor is concrete, and a vintage marble slab sits above the island.

Jason Bell, Design Director at Blackberry Farm Design, designed this kitchen with textured reclaimed wood as the focal point of the space. “We used wood to give it a seasoned, lived-in feel, which is a great way to create a farmhouse look,” he says. A wooden chair completes the look, matching the wooden walls. If you want to add a modern twist, choose a glass table top and colored chairs.
old and new
Designer Lindsay Mens of TOM Design Studio created this kitchen with three goals: add texture, create warmth, and build an inviting atmosphere. “A farmhouse kitchen should be a combination of old and new,” she believes, and by adding vintage accessories like wooden cutting boards, bread bins, and glazed jars to new ones, she We are realizing this. Another of her tips is to use light and dark furniture to create contrast. For this cozy kitchen, she eschewed the traditional black and white approach often seen in farmhouse kitchens, opting instead for a wood-heavy combination for a soft feel.

ELLE DECOR A-List designer Young Huh created this country kitchen in an old farmhouse by replacing the typical kitchen island with an antique worktable. “This makes the kitchen feel traditional, timeless and warm,” she says. The cabinets are hand-painted Farrow & Ball's Teresa's Green, a color that Hugh says is “reminiscent of 1930s kitchens.” To further decorate it, I used surface-mounted pendant lights rather than installing recessed lights.

Inspired by Parisian flea markets, Welsh farms and the Cornish seaside, Saskia Saunders Ingram generously incorporated natural and reclaimed materials when renovating her kitchen. “An ancient elm barn door topped the island, and we added finishing touches with folk art, handmade pottery, and dried natural flowers,” she explains.

Cynthia and Alex Rice designed this kitchen with the surrounding outdoor aesthetic in mind. “We love incorporating the natural wood tones of cypress and touches of beachy blue and bright white,” explains Cynthia. Layered, soft textures combined with polished quartzite countertops and chrome accents keep the space modern and bright.
