AHMEDABAD: It was a morning of fear, helplessness and loss for the Dalwani family. A routine household chore took a tragic turn on Thursday when tragedy struck the family residing in German Veniya Bungalow in Bhat village in Gandhinagar. 22-year-old Aditya Dalwani, who was trapped inside the first floor of the bungalow, was burnt alive in a fire that broke out in the kitchen around 9.30 am as his parents Vedprakash and Deepa and sister Ayushi watched in horror. While the trio managed to escape the inferno to safety, Aditya could not be saved as he was trapped behind a locked grill that prevented any entry or exit. The tragedy occurred when Aditya's mother Deepa was trying to boil milk on a gas stove. Reports said the milk boiled over and the container caught fire. It was only when Deepa tried to douse the flames by pouring water on it that the fire ignited and quickly spread from the cooktop to other objects in the kitchen and engulfed the entire house within a matter of minutes. Gandhinagar Fire Superintendent Kaizad Dastur said the house looked like burning paper when the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar fire brigade reached the spot. Aditya was sleeping in his bedroom on the first floor when the fire spread. Though the iron bars on the landing of the floor were locked and the keys were lying on the ground, they could not open the balcony door to escape due to the leaping flames. The fire gained momentum with such ferocity that it was impossible for the family to unlock the bars and rescue Aditya. The firefighters had to cut the iron beams to retrieve the charred body. Twenty firefighters fought the blaze for five hours and used 70,000 litres of water. A preliminary investigation by Inspector KB Shankla of Adalaj police revealed that a gas stove was in use at the time of the incident. It is believed that the fire started due to pouring water on the stove. Further investigation is underway and the assistance of the forensic science laboratory will also be sought to ascertain the exact cause of the tragedy. The young man had just graduated from a reputed college in Gandhinagar. His father owns a petrochemical plant in Saijpur Bhoga and a printing press in Jhumku village in Gandhinagar. The grieving family held Aditya's funeral in Gandhinagar in the evening.
