When illustrator Emily Brinkley moved into her London home, she saw something in the blank canvas that no one else could see. “We had no problem moving in right away and living very happily there. We literally had no problems,” she says of when she first moved into the flat, 525-square-foot apartment. said. “But we knew we could turn the space into something special.”
Of course, we took the tour and immediately noticed Brinkley's colorful atmosphere. As we looked around, we found her three notable lessons worth sharing about her sunny kitchen. Let's take a look!
Boldly put your own stamp on the space.
It was very important to Brinkley that her surroundings reflect her creativity and personal style. “After renting for a while and getting frustrated with not being able to make any changes to the decor, I was desperate to buy her first home and really make it my own,” she says. “I wanted people to come into my house and say, 'This is it.' you! ”
From the beginning, Brinkley had 20 different ideas in mind for what she wanted to do with the space for her bold, retro-inspired stamps.
She explains that she is influenced by designs from the 60s and 70s. “I'm drawn to bold psychedelic patterns, bright colors, and funky shapes. To reflect back on the last few decades, I covered the walls of my apartment with bold, retro wallpaper and decorated the space with bright colors and vintage furniture. I filled it up and really went back in time.”
So how did Brinkley remodel her kitchen? She started by replacing the beige cupboard doors with midcentury teak-style wood and adding colorful daffodil wallpaper from Family Wallpapers. I created a fun accent wall with this. She said, “I didn't cook much, but now I spend a lot of time in my bright retro kitchen.''
Purchase items at unique locations.
Brinkley got her oven and kitchen laminate worktops from IKEA, but she and her mother spent a lot of time scouring boot sales and charity shops looking for retro designs. Just be persistent. Finding that special find may require several trips to the thrift store and hours of searching through items. The reward is finding a unique treasure that you absolutely love.
