A small galley kitchen with a vintage feel
Matt Albiani
To make their tiny galley kitchen at the Sea Roost rental resort look larger, homeowners Ron Brand and Matt Albiani (Mate Gallery) kept the walls and cabinets simple white but added color and pattern with a well-worn vintage Dally rug that spans nearly the entire width of the floor space. They also searched far and wide for unique pieces once from or inspired by nature, like this taxidermy fish they purchased at an estate sale in Montauk, to add even more of a coastal feel.

Rustic repurposed galley kitchen
Brian Woodcock
At their rural Tennessee weekend home, brothers Seth and Chad Gilbert outfitted a small but mighty wall-to-wall kitchen with an array of second-hand items. Serving as the second “wall” is an island covered in blue-hued paneling that they repurposed from the home's original front porch; the retro refrigerator was picked up on eBay for $200.

Clean and modern galley kitchen
Christopher Dibble
In this single-story 1970s home by designer Max Humphrey, the galley kitchen's floor space is too small for an island or table, but with an easily movable stool positioned against the end wall, it's spacious enough to seat a second person. The flat-fronted cabinets are made of lacquered plywood, and a glossy, polka-dot terra-cotta backsplash adds a playful touch.

Do you change your mind often? Pick a simple, versatile color palette (like this rustic-chic white-and-grey galley kitchen by designer Loi Thai) and add color with accessories. We love the deep blue here, but you can easily swap it out for another color if you feel like changing your mood.

Patterned floor galley kitchen

Another way to reduce the hallway feel is to break up the materials: Here, a patterned floor and dark base cabinets calm the space, while lighter upper cabinets draw the eye up to the ceiling.

White and wooden galley kitchen
Front + Main
Light wood cabinets add warmth to a space that can feel too cold with white next to the room's gray floors, while black hardware and appliances add a touch of drama.
