Dark soapstone countertops, black-stained knotty alder cabinets, and hickory bar stools create a rustic feel for this Wisconsin lakeside home. Bright yellow lanterns complement the dark finishes. “We wanted the open kitchen and great room to have an old lodge feel,” says homeowner Sarah Anderson. A blue-and-green tile backsplash that runs from the counter to the ceiling reflects the lakeside home's natural setting.

“Life is too short to live in a white box,” says designer Grace Mitchell. “I ask my clients, 'When you were a kid, what was the first crayon you always picked out of your Crayola box?' If you loved cornflower blue then, you'll love it today and tomorrow. Don't worry about hating it in 10 years. Enjoy your home now!” For balance, Grace pairs bold cabinets with subdued, mostly white, marble, or quartzite countertops, like in this kitchen. For extra smiles, she added a light blue range and hood. “Colored appliances are so fun and memorable, so why choose fingerprint-prone stainless steel,” she says.

A small kitchen can feel much larger when painted a vibrant white. To enhance the open feeling, homeowner Maria Carr went for an all-white look, including Carrara marble countertops, handmade marble-and-wood shelves, and a marble subway-tile backsplash. She also replaced the existing linoleum floors with light-toned black oak floors in a herringbone pattern. Rather than stain, she used Woca Oil by Woca to keep the wood from turning pink.

To make the spacious kitchen more comfortable, Country life Editor-in-chief Rachel Hardige Barrett chose the same pale blue for the cabinets, walls, and ceiling of her Mississippi farmhouse. “This slightly moody blue has a historic feel without being coastal,” Rachel says. Tips: When painting your cabinets, choose a cabinet-grade enamel paint for a flawless finish that's less likely to chip.

Olive Green
A deep olive-green cabinet color makes this small, beamed kitchen seem even more inviting, but the reflective tile keeps it from feeling too dark. The unlacquered brass faucet and bistro-style shelving also exude a aged sheen.
