Construction crews are working on the $70 million project. Ivanhoe Elementary School in Los Angeles This will result in a new two-storey building with 15 permanent classrooms.
East Cider The new building will also include a new kitchen and serving area for the school and a parking garage for 10 cars when crews finish work in 2026, according to the report. Nick Gillock, senior design manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District's Design and Administration department, said this will eliminate the need for some of the school's portable buildings.
Ivanhoe has 435 students enrolled for the 2023-2024 school year, and space is at a premium, with staff members such as language teachers and school psychologists meeting with students in small spaces not designed for that use, said Principal Linda Lecia.
Gillock said the new buildings will look like single-story buildings when viewed from the street. Scott Singletary, senior manager of facilities development, added that landscaping will create a buffer between the buildings and the street. On campus, trees, landscaping and benches will be added to outdoor spaces around the new buildings.
Gillock said the school's existing permanent building, built in 1941, will remain in place.
The school has a long history. A two-story school was built on this site in 1889. That building was demolished and replaced with a two-story brick building in 1926. By 1939, the building had become dilapidated. The current school building, built in 1941, was designed by Alfred S. Nibecker Jr., the district's longtime architect.
