MILWAUKEE — It all started sweetly for 14-year-old Milan Robinson.
“I’m making sweet potato pie right now,” she said.
It's not just any pie. It's one of the secret recipes shared with Milan Robinson by her Grandma Williams, who passed away four years ago.
“Grandma Williams would always host a family dinner on Sundays, and sometimes there would be 30 or 40 additional family members,” Milan Robinson said. “No one left hungry.”
Milan Robinson not only baked with Grandma Williams, but she also spent a lot of time with Grandma Gro. Gloria Robinson founded Nino's Southern Sides, a popular soul food restaurant in the Milwaukee area. She passed away in 2020 due to complications from COVID-19.
“Breading has always been a big part of my life,” Milan Robinson said. “I saw both of my grandmothers always in the kitchen.''
She said baking her special recipes is a way to honor the women who have taught her so much.
“My grandparents and mother always said, “Cook with love,'' and “listen to your ancestors.'' , you have to cook or bake,” he said. Milan Robinson.
Milan Robinson said it felt right to start her own baking business. It's called “Manna Morsels” by Chef Milan. Manna is known in the Bible as the “bread of heaven” or “the food of angels.” She said the response she has received has been amazing.
“A lot of people tell me how great my food is,” she said. “They say they'll order from me again. Lots of compliments, that's nice.”
Her parents said they were very proud. They see the work that goes into each dessert, including caramel pound cake, key lime pie bars, and banana pudding. They also offer tastings.
“She's taking it to the next level. It's really inspiring to see her continue to pursue her passion at such a young age,” said her father, Lamont Robinson. “As her parents, we just want to support her.”
