Think of the stainless steel platters and sundae cups from your favorite childhood cafe. Shiny accents evoke a strong “nostalgia for the days of classic diners” and even “fine dining with white tablecloths,” says Flora. The best trends are versatile, and metallics give high and low appeal. Additionally, “Chrome offers a practical feel,” she adds, blending seamlessly into any environment and reflecting its surroundings.
Unlike passing trends (apologies, wiggles), the great news is that silver metallic accents are here to stay. Metallics have endured through the decades, “and in every era, we have a different interpretation,” Flora adds. I may be biased, but this latest version is probably the most original and visually interesting yet. Metal is no longer limited to cold, hard surfaces like tables and chairs. Now they come in soft materials and upholstery, introducing novel wrinkled textures and adding a touch of sparkle to every corner of a space.
Unless you live in a spaceship, a factory warehouse, or a commercial kitchen, metal will definitely stand out against your existing decor. And this contrast is what you want to take advantage of when styling.
“I love juxtaposing stainless steel elements with traditional buildings,” says Flora. “Even something as simple as pairing a chrome vase with a flowing floral arrangement can create interesting moments.” This versatility allows even large spaces to have subtle accents. It can be seamlessly integrated into any space. She also notes that metallics pair especially well with bright colors that offset that shine and add warmth.
Another approach to styling comes from David Mann, president of MR Architecture + Decor, who advocates a different kind of contrast: natural materials. “Natural elements like wood and stone add depth and warmth,” he suggests. “Strategic placement maximizes impact and creates a visually appealing space.”
Before you go overboard with chrome and stuff your shopping cart with shiny items, consider this advice from interior designer Artem Kropovinsky. “Less metallic is more,” and be strategic in your choices, “playing with color and texture” to softly integrate those elements without being overwhelming. ” This conservative approach creates a carefully selected artistic look in keeping with a new wave of space-age glamor.
