ELKHART — The Elkhart Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire in the 1200 block of Main Street early Sunday morning.
“Firefighters arrived and found the resident in the front yard and smoke coming from the open front door,” an EFD news release said. “The residents said they were sleeping on the second floor and woke up to the sound of the fire alarm going off. When they went down to the first floor, they found a fire in the area of some appliances on the kitchen counter. I discovered that there is.”
One of the residents retrieved a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the fire before leaving the house. All occupants escaped safely from the building. Once the fire department had extinguished the fire and ensured all areas were extinguished, they ventilated the smoke-filled house.
“Investigation revealed the occupant was charging a small portable vehicle jump starter unit on the kitchen counter,” the release states. “It appears that the device overheated while charging, causing the device to overheat and catch fire, igniting the appliances next to it. The fire then spread to the cabinets above and ignited the wood.”
There was smoke damage throughout the first floor, and residents said smoke detectors set off an alarm that forced them to evacuate. No injuries were reported, and the release added that the fire was accidental.
