Colorful eggs, brightly colored clothing and other gifts for kids will brighten up Easter at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen on Saturday.
Lou Sartor, the soup kitchen's executive director, and a group of volunteers met Thursday to fill baskets with Easter goods for the children provided at the soup kitchen.
Sater started soliciting donations from local organizations six weeks ago. Her kindness and generosity with over 300 baskets, eggs, candy, and other gifts exceeded her expectations.
“It's a lot of love and a lot of happiness,” Sater said. “Every child, from toddlers to seniors. We've never had so many donations. It's the people who know we're helping children. But I don't want to think about my children.'' I remembered that there was no Easter basket. ”
Students from Spartanburg Christian Academy also volunteered to help pack baskets and prepare for Easter weekend. Micah Finelli, 18, said it was a great way to bring happiness to the community.
“The principal said it was similar to when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples,” Finelli said. “This is a great way to support the community and bring good memories to those who can't do this for themselves. I'm glad our schools can collaborate.”
While children won't be the only ones receiving baskets, Sarter said they will also be giving out baskets to people who may live alone.
“There may be adults who live alone or don't have family anywhere, so we're giving away baskets on Easter Sunday,” Sarter said. “This will ease the fears of parents. All we ask is that you please come here and pick up your Easter basket.”
Each basket contains an Easter egg filled with candy, stuffed animals, and other items. . Clothes such as dresses, shoes, suits and jackets were also donated. Baskets will be distributed to children on Saturday.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and children pick up their baskets and clothes after lunch.
“We're going to donate until every child receives one,” Sarter said. “We're also going to have a great Easter meal with ham, turkey and dressing, sweet potato custard, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and potato salad. If anyone could come dressed up as the Easter Bunny, I'd be happy to help.” Our day will go well.”
