Bangalore:
Senior Congress MLA Shamanur Sivashankarappa has raised the issue of recent concerns regarding Gayathri Sidheshwara, sitting MP and wife of former union minister GM Sidheshwara, who is the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the Davangere assembly seat in Karnataka. His remarks caused controversy.
Mr. Sivashankarappa, speaking at the party's workers' conference, belittled Mr. Sidheswara's qualifications, claiming that he lacked the ability to tackle public issues effectively.
“As you all know, she wanted to win the elections and give a lotus flower to Mr. Modi.First, let us understand the Davangere issue. We (Congress) have been doing development work in the area. It's one thing to know how to speak, but they only know how to cook in the kitchen, and the Opposition doesn't have the power to speak in front of the people,” Shivashankarappa said.
The 92-year-old Congress leader is a five-time MLA from Davangere South and is the oldest MLA in the party. His daughter-in-law Prabha Mallikarjun is the Congress candidate for the seat in the upcoming elections.
In response to Shivashankarappa's comments, Gayathri Sidheshwara highlighted the progress women have made in various professions, including those traditionally dominated by men.
“He meant something like we should just cook and stay in the kitchen. What job are women not doing today? We're flying. .The old man doesn't know how far women have come. He doesn't know the love that every woman has for cooking at home for men, children and the elderly,” said Sidheshwara. said.
The BJP condemned Mr. Shivashankarappa's comments and lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India, party spokesperson Malavika Avinash said.
