Star shuttler Saina Nehwal on Saturday accused the state's veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa of making “sexist abuse” against Communist Party of India candidate Gayatri Sidheshwara from Davangere constituency. vehemently criticized.
Sivashankarappa, 92, a sitting MLA from Davangere South, said Gayatri, wife of former Union minister and sitting MP Sidheshwara GM, “belonged in the kitchen”.
Taking exception to his own remarks, Nehwal posted on his X account: “Women should be confined to the kitchen – this is what Karnataka's top leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa ji has said. @bjp4india candidate from Davanagere, sexist rant Gayatri Mr. Sidheshwara is the least expected of a party that claims ladki hun lad sakti hun.”
Nehwal, 34, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, said such misogynistic comments were upsetting at a time when women in the country aspire to make their mark in all fields.
“What did the Congress party want when I won a medal for Bharat athletes in the stadium, what should I have done? Every girl and woman should achieve great success in any field. Why do you say that when you dream of getting it?
“On the one hand, we are doing Nari Shakti ko Vandhan. The Women Reservation Bill was passed under the leadership of our Prime Minister Modi and on the other hand we are doing Nari Shakti Ka Apman and the misogynists. …It’s really upsetting,” Nehwal wrote.
Mr. Shivashankarappa recently made the controversial remark while addressing Congress party workers at Buntu Bhawan in the district.
“She (Gayathri) doesn't even know how to speak properly. She is fit to cook at home,” said the former owner of Karnataka Premier League (KPL) franchise Davanagere Diamonds. Mr. Shivashankarappa said.
