SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — This Easter, Spartanburg Soup Kitchen is hoping to bring more joy to children and families in need.
Soup Kitchen Executive Director Lou Sartor said the kitchen is busy preparing for Easter Sunday.
“You can smell the turkey now,” Sarter said.
Sartor said it's important for the soup kitchen to share its blessings with the community.
“For all of you who volunteer here, there is no place where you haven't celebrated Easter with your family,” Sartor said. “It's important for us to pass that on to people who may not have been so lucky. It's all about us receiving blessings and sharing those blessings with others.”
Marva Farr, a soup kitchen volunteer, said she wanted to help out at the soup kitchen on Sunday because of the amount of food they are preparing for it.
“Given the amount of food they were preparing for tomorrow, I felt like they needed help today, so I wanted to be a part of that,” Farr added. “I enjoy helping fix their food and it makes me feel so good because God wants us to help those who can't help themselves. So I is helping myself and I pray that I can help others who come along every day.”
Sarter added that it takes volunteers eight to 13 hours to prepare an Easter feast of this size.
Farr said the offerings include mac and cheese, turkey, ham, dressing, rice and cabbage.
But that's not all the soup kitchen offers.
On Saturday, the kitchen handed out 250 Easter baskets to children.
“As you can see, the Easter basket is still here for round two tomorrow,” Sartor said. “I think it brings joy, it brings hope, and it lets them know they are loved by us at Spartanburg Soup Kitchen. Imagine having something that he doesn’t have or she doesn’t have that will create memories for the kids.”
The soup kitchen also distributes handmade Easter dresses. Adults who live alone will also receive an Easter basket.
The soup kitchen said its doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Sunday and will remain open until the last person is served.
