Research shows single adults need an income of £31,536 to cover essential expenses
Adults living alone need an annual income of at least £31,536 to cover their expenses and still be able to afford essentials such as food, clothing and hygiene products. However, the UK average salary of £29,669 falls slightly short, and many people feel they are moving ever closer to sanitary poverty. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that one in four people living alone are suffering from the current financial crisis, revealing the scale of the current cost of living crisis. As a result, 56% of them are having to make difficult decisions, such as choosing to pay rent rather than buy groceries or hygiene products. And of that same group, 52 per cent have had to stop socializing, and 14 per cent have even stopped stocking up on everyday items like toilet paper and sanitary products. The research was commissioned by hygiene and health company Essity, in partnership with Unilever, Haleon, Kimberly-Clark and Edgewell, and will launch Tesco's in-store promotions from April to May, where customers can choose between two products.
