Stolen items found at riverside camp
Ventura County Sheriff's deputies recently recovered approximately $2,500 worth of merchandise after tracking the suspect to an encampment on the bottom of the Santa Clara River.
Sheriff's officials said in a news release that the suspect is suspected of stealing multiple tool boxes and acetylene torch sets from commercial businesses in the Oxnard area in March and April. Business goes back to the bottom of the river.
The sheriff's Homeless Liaison Unit identified the suspect as a 30-year-old Oxnard man who was known to them from a prior contact from the Santa Clara Riverbed operation.
On April 9 and 10, members of the homeless task force, who have extensive knowledge of riverbed encampments, worked with detectives to search for the suspect, authorities said. The operation included the use of recently purchased all-terrain vehicles using grant funding to navigate remote areas that were previously inaccessible.
On the afternoon of April 10, detectives located the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of robbery. He was booked into the county jail but later released on his own recognizance, according to jail records.
Sheriff's officials said the stolen items, including a tool box and torch set, were recovered and returned to their owners.
