When designing a small space, there is less room for error. Even the smallest decorating mistake can make a limited square footage feel more cramped, so it's important to make smart design moves that maximize square footage rather than shrink it. Here are some of the most decorative offenders in small kitchens, according to southern designers.
say yes to everything
Even for those of us who tend to be extreme in our design preferences, it's worth recognizing when less is truly more. “I think it's important to practice restraint, no matter how small the space,” says Dallas decorator Noel Pittman. “While it can be tempting to include all sorts of bells and whistles in the planning stages, in a small space it's best to keep it simple. I try to think about what will still be functional and beautiful in 10 years.”
small sink selection
What may sound counterintuitive may actually be the right choice. “You might be tempted to choose a small sink in a small kitchen, but that could be a big mistake,” says Lauren Reese, a designer in Great Falls, Virginia. “A small sink that is not large enough to easily wash dishes will make a small kitchen feel even smaller, as the process of washing dishes will feel more difficult. Skip the small countertop and choose the right size. It’s definitely worth it to create a functional sink.”
(Excessive) expansion of home appliances
Similarly, pay attention to scale. “If your kitchen is small, your refrigerator, range, and hood will need to be scaled down accordingly,” says Dallas designer Jean Liu. “When you enter a small space and feel like these appliances are looming over you, it can be overwhelming.”
layer lighting
Don't over-embellish to make a statement. “When it comes to lighting small spaces, less is more,” says Bohlert Massey of Bohlert Massey Interiors in Inlet Beach, Florida. “I think it's better to just use task lights instead of multiple competing lights.”
skimp on drawers
Smart storage is essential in a main space like the kitchen. Cabinet and drawer preferences are personal, but Jacksonville, Fla., designer Andrew Howard has strong opinions about what's most functional. Drawers are always the most convenient in the kitchen, and above two doors there is often one drawer. [cabinets]'' Howard said. “If I were to build a small kitchen, I think almost everything would be drawers.”
shelf overlooking
Andrea M. Taylor of Dallas-based Andrea Marino Design has her own tastes when it comes to practical storage. “Rather than adding upper cabinets, which are heavy and take up more space, consider choosing shelving instead,” she says. “This makes the ceilings appear higher while taking up less space and making the room feel more open without sacrificing storage.”
Consider your personality and take safety measures
“[One] “The pitfall is to think that a small kitchen doesn't need the same details, fittings, and finishes as a regular or large kitchen,” notes Liu. “For example, even if your space is small, inject it with the same level of personality and perspective as the rest of your home. Choose a great paint color. Find ways to display it with beautiful accessories and small pieces of art. Splurge on beautiful hand soaps and lotions to enhance your overall look and feel.
