This summer, roses will bloom even more spectacularly and beautifully when enriched with four specific kitchen scraps.
Towards the end of April, now is the last chance to feed your roses before flowering, and this is essential for gorgeous blooms.
Choosing the right fertilizer can be difficult, but providing your roses with optimal nutrition is virtually cost-free and only requires storing certain food scraps.
Charlotte Ecker Wiggins, master gardener and founder of Gardening Charlotte, shared a simple homemade rose food recipe she has used for years to keep roses healthy.
“I've been making it for decades using dried eggshells, banana peels, coffee grounds, and Epsom salt,” she said.
Banana peels are rich in potassium and eggshells contain calcium, both of which are essential nutrients for root growth and contribute to the development of larger flowers, the Express reported. ing.
Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, which is an important nutrient for plant flowering and further helps prevent fungal diseases. Additionally, Epsom salt is rich in magnesium and sulfur, which are also necessary for plant growth.
How to make homemade rose food to improve flower blooming
All you need to do is save your banana peels and egg shells and keep them dry somewhere in your kitchen.
Charlotte advises: “I keep a basket of paper towels on top of the fridge. It's easier to cut banana peels once they're dry, but I cut both fresh and dry peels.” Did.
First, dry the coffee grounds and store them in a plastic container. You may need to purchase Epsom bath salts. Available at Tesco for around £3.50.
She further explained: “I dry the coffee on newspaper on a bread tray in my garage. Once dry, I store the dried coffee in a reusable plastic container and use it later to mix all the ingredients.”
All that's left to do is mix the ingredients. Mix equal parts banana peel and coffee grounds, then add eggshells and half the Epsom salt.
Be sure to break up the eggshells before adding them to the mixture. This promotes flower decomposition and allows the flowers to slowly access calcium over time.
When you're ready to feed your roses, simply make a small groove around the rose's drip line and sprinkle with the mixture.
This rose feed is easy to make and can produce large rose blooms if used correctly. It's also a great way to reduce food waste at home.
She says, “One of the best things about this mixture is that it reuses banana peels, egg shells, and coffee grounds to create a plant-based food that's proven itself. It also helps to get an additional source of Epsom salts for tired muscles. ”
