Spirits haunting the mountains of western Montana poured their energy into the Big Easy last night as a galactic grass voodoo man kitchen dweller led a tribute to Dr. John in toulouse theater In New Orleans. It was one of those nights where the famous Night Tripper song was translated into a progressive bluegrass jam, a true expression of a once-in-a-lifetime event. jazz festival magic.
Sunday's 9pm show was, shockingly, the Kitchen Dwellers' first time playing in New Orleans, but there was plenty of southern hospitality in the packed venue.Although this was his first full band show in NOLA, guitarist max davis first attended Jazz Fest in 2014, so it's no surprise that he was responsible for a good portion of the excellent Doctor songs, including “Cold Cold Cold” and the beautifully swinging “Such A Night.” Ta.
While there were plenty of delicious Creole home-cooked dishes on the hotpot, the Dwellers also delivered with their own jam-grass spices, including a seamless transition from the peaking “Such A Night” to a frenetic version of KD's “Woods Lake.” It was richly seasoned. Throughout the evening, the band moved from one set of songs to another at the request of the servers. cafe du mont I glide around the busy table, carrying a tray full of hot coffee. The Dwellers didn't limit themselves to just their own songs and Dr. John's songs, weaving a nice sandwich of “Right Place, Wrong Time” into the highly relevant “Gumbo.” Phishing And back to “Right Place, Wrong Time”.
banjo player davis quartet Torin Daniels, bassist Joe Funkmandolin player Sean Swain We also highlighted the latest discs. seven devils “Wind Bitten” was particularly loud. Bassist Joe Funk had a remarkable night at the forefront, singing his own song “The Crown” and opener “Muir Made.” A plaintive funk drawl was the dominant voice, but soft-spoken mandolinist Sean Swain spoke to the strings as he jammed to songs like “Ghost in the Bottle.”
There's an inherent spooky element to Kitchen Dwellers' music, whether it's about ghosts in bottles, haunted lakes, or the overall decline of middle America due to addiction and mental health crises. . Similarly, throughout his prolific career, Dr. John confronted the spirits that lurk in the darkness of the swamps of New Orleans and beyond. This stylistic blend was most rewarding on the downright unsettling “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” towards the end of the single-set show.of Griguri Classical music has been part of the Dwellers' live repertoire for several years now, and was likely the genesis for Sunday's one-off show. Torin Daniels accents the cover with percussive banjo hits, fitting the music of Dr. John, who continues to inspire musicians in his hometown of New Orleans and beyond. I sent a compliment.
