As someone who has watched the Netflix reboot twice, I can confidently say that it's a huge success. I laughed. I cried. I wanted about 8 more episodes. The new Fab Five is very attractive. It's hard to stop watching.
It maintains the same format as the original version. Five gay men transform a (usually) straight man. They redesign his house, clothes, hairstyle, and his inner confidence. In addition to loving their witty banter and heartfelt investment in each project, the Georgia loft they use as their home base is so fun and fresh that you'll want to steal it. This is the look I want.
It's unashamedly industrial. There is a garage door that opens to the outside. It's an open concept, but you don't see the bedroom area. Perfect for enjoying and watching the transformation genius complete the final test. It actually reminds me a bit of a retail catalog set, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can't go wrong if you inject your personality into it.
The palette is neutral. Concrete, white subway tile, leather, glass, and natural wood dominate. I know you're thinking, “I don't have subway tile in my apartment.” Oh, do you have a snack? Beautiful geniuses have created tile wallpaper. It sticks to the wall like paper, but looks like tile. This is a great and inexpensive way to achieve the subway tile look. And the best part? Subway tile looks great in 98% of his homes. Beyond style, it always looks fresh.
The Fab Five loft also has exposed brick and is painted white, making it almost assimilated with subway tile. If you have exposed bricks, you are a lucky duck and your friends will probably talk about you jealously behind your back. If not, just paint all your walls white and stop doing that. If you want contrast, paint the window and door trim black.
Let's talk about furniture. The loft has a large white section. A white sofa is not very practical, so if you are concerned, choose a light gray or black sofa. black? Doesn't it look big and ungainly? Unless it's a sophisticated, tailored silhouette. Pair it with a shapely leather chair. It doesn't necessarily have to be an armchair, but make sure it's super comfortable and perfect for curling up and opening a book. If you can tuck your foot under it, you win. For tables, consider natural wood, glass, or metal. Rectangular shapes look the most modern, but we're not going to banish a nice oval table from the house either.
Accessorize the entire look with pops of greenery, gallery frames, and fun modern light fixtures. Oh, and don't forget the bar cart. You can't have a great party without it.
