Finding the right middle ground between style and function is never an easy task.
An interior design expert shared four kitchen trends to avoid and what to do instead.
In a video that went viral, Abby Posner (@home.swee.home) showed her followers an unrealistic decorating choice that made cleaning more difficult.
“Finding the balance between beauty and practicality is always a struggle,” the Instagrammer said.
“While these design trends look great, they are difficult to maintain in the long run.”
As a first tip, Abby suggested avoiding open shelves in your home.
She explained that decorative features tend to collect dust quickly.
Not only do you need to dust frequently, but your setup also requires you to remove all items before wiping down.
Instead, Abby recommended choosing enclosed cabinets, which are easier to maintain and hide clutter.
Experts also advised homeowners against adding shaker-style cabinets to their kitchens.
This feature's recessed panels prevent dust, dirt, and oil from accumulating in the four corners of each cabinet.
Instead, Abby suggested choosing a flat surface that's easy to wipe in one motion and less likely to collect dust.
In her next dud, she showed her followers an example of a backsplash that was difficult to clean.
This feature was made up of numerous small tiles, meaning there were many more lines of grout to scrub.
Choosing one complete piece of backsplash will speed up the cleaning process since there are no grout lines to trap oil and dirt.
Finally, Abby explained why homeowners should avoid grooved panels.
Cleaning tips to make your home beautiful
Real estate agent Stephanie Booth shared her go-to cleaning tips with The US Sun.
- Use dish soap and baking soda to scrub your stove and kitchen cabinets.
- As soon as you move in, clean under the carpet, dishwasher, and appliances.
- Make crockpot potpourri with sliced lemons, vanilla, rosemary sprigs, and 2 cups water.
- Fluff your pillows, but don't worry about getting a karate chop.
She explained that over time, dust becomes trapped in grooves and ridges.
This makes this feature more difficult to clean as each panel has to be wiped down one at a time.
Abby suggested choosing a smooth laminate because it allows you to add similar detail without trapping dust.
Instagram users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“I did all this exactly to minimize cleaning too,” one impressed viewer wrote.
Another follower said: “I'm telling my friends all this. No grooved panels, no open shelves. No anything that could collect dust.”
A third person commented, “I totally agree! I never understood why there were open shelves on display, but dust was accumulating!?”
“Grooved panels, oh my! Who has the energy to clean between all those lines on a regular basis unless you hire help?”
