My go-to for potlucks is a colorful salad with kale and red onions. People tend to bring their highest-octane comfort food to potlucks, so anyone who brings a pretty green salad (to cut through the leftover richness) is instantly a hero. I discovered it (through sheer laziness at the last minute). What an easy win.
The problem is that chopping red onions an hour before a social event poses some challenges. Because onions don't just wash. They penetrate and scent the skin like the evil twin of a lavender bath. No matter how many times I wash it, the scent remains and I can't help but put eau de onion on it.
That is, until I found this wonderful little treasure. Rub-a-Way Bar, known by many names, is something of a miracle. It's a soap-shaped doo-dad made from lightweight stainless steel that magically and instantly removes onion (and garlic, shallot, and green onion) odor from your skin. Just rub it on your hands like a bar of soap, with or without water, and all signs of fragrance will disappear. i swear.

The science behind this scent transmission is beyond me, but for those who do, it's clear that iron molecules combine with (smelly) sulfur molecules on the hands, thereby removing them. It seems that they are related. Although it seems expensive, this lifesaving device sells for less than $10.
“The smell disappears!!!” raved one five-star fan. “…I used it to get rid of garlic and garlic odor on my hands after cutting or preparing a meal. If you have a smell that you can't get rid of, use this to help. Lasts forever. must!!”
When I used the deodorant bar for the first time, I thought I was imagining the effect. I called my teens into the kitchen and let them sniff (they didn't budge because I told my teens, “Come in here and smell my hands!”). ” but it doesn't actually even respond). I marched into the living room and forced the issue. Then I heard the magic words. “What? I don't smell anything.” Of course, that was followed by, “Mom, please move.” I can't see the TV. ”

One big fan wrote: “Where have you been? The smell of onions and garlic on your hands. Nothing worked. You tried all the common and unusual methods. Then you heard about this stone.”
Back to my savior kale salad. Sparkle with fresh pomegranates during the holidays. I use dried cranberries in the fall and cherry tomatoes in the summer. The secret sauce (literally) is a dressing made with good quality olive oil, fresh garlic, and sweet balsamic. Style the red onion strips on top, curving them toward each other. And, of course, do not forget to “scrub” the last onion infusion with a nice bar.
Arrive at the party smelling fresh like roses.
