Summer is only about a month away, but here in Massachusetts we're already feeling the spirit of the season: warmer temperatures, longer days, shorts, T-shirts, proms, and graduations.
I always look forward to going for walks this time of year, setting up the wading pool for my daughter, and grilling on the deck for my family. But one thing I can't stand this time of year is trying to do all these fun activities while having to deal with wasps.
This season's wasp activity has already begun
There is already increased wasp activity around my house and deck. Therefore, special traps had to be installed in the deck area to prevent activity. Since applying these traps, the wasps are not as aggressive as before, but I would still like to see an improvement. The last thing I want is for my daughter to get stung when she goes out on the deck or plays in the pool.
There are some items you already have in your kitchen that will repel wasps from your home.
I recently read online that some scents can deter wasps from swarming in and around your home. These items are everyday essentials, so you may already have them in your kitchen or pantry. According to The Spruce, the following items can help prevent wasps from swarming your home, patio, deck, and more.
As mentioned earlier, you probably already have these items in your home, so you can try them out to see if they keep the wasps away from your living space. One of the ways Spruce suggests using vinegar is to mix it evenly with water in a spray bottle, add a few drops of dish soap, and spray it on your deck. I would like to try this as the deck is the area most prone to wasp activity.
Massachusetts residents will be dealing with hornets this summer
Whether you live in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, or anywhere in between, there's a good chance you'll encounter wasps that you'll have to deal with this summer. Instead of spending a fortune to fix the problem, try using these household products to repel pesky pests. It might work. You can find more tips on how to keep wasps away from your home here.
