As an editor who's always experimenting with kitchen gadgets, I take storage seriously. I bought a wooden cupboard when I last moved, and I store my copper cookware on top of it. I think pots can also function as decorations. But I'm a minimalist when it comes to countertops. Like many people, I don't have as much counter space as I would like. But I also don't want my countertop to be so cluttered that I can't place a cutting board on it. Water filters, gooseneck kettles, and coffee makers have fixed locations, while appliances like air fryers and blenders are in cabinets.
All that's left is a 16″ x 25″ granite area between my stove and refrigerator. When I started testing the Caraway Cutting Board Set, I put it there for easy access. But to my surprise, I liked the setup so much that I've kept it there ever since. So when Caraway asked if I'd like to try out their matching Prep Set, I didn't hesitate to say yes. I didn't even have a clue where I'd put it.
Caraway Prep Set
The prep set consists of a birch wood knife block, a matte finish utensil holder, and a matching display tray to hold them. All of these parts are magnetized so they stay in place. This set comes complete with 5 wooden utensils, 4 knives, and kitchen shears, and the knife handle color matches the tray and utensil holder for a sophisticated look. I chose the cream color, but Caraway has five other options to suit any kitchen. Typical colors are Peracotta (pink terracotta), Mist (possibly seafoam green), navy, charcoal, and gray.
As it turned out, the 15.5-inch wide tray fit perfectly into the empty counter space, and there was still plenty of room for a cutting board set. We placed the prep set on the backsplash and the cutting board slightly vertically in the refrigerator to make meal prep more convenient than ever. I love having all the tools I need for slicing and chopping in one corner. Of course, it goes without saying that when cooking in a ceramic Dutch oven or nonstick frying pan, there are also wooden cookware within reach.
You're probably thinking that a knife block and utensil holder on your counter would have the same effect, and yes, I've kept these pieces on my counter before, but it was the Prep Set's compact footprint (just 15.5 x 10.35 x 5.32 inches) that made the difference for me.
Honestly, this knife pales in comparison to the more expensive knives I have mounted on a magnetic knife block (which I currently have stored in my cabinet). However, I am impressed with the Caraway knife's sharp German steel blade and sturdy, balanced feel. This knife powerfully cuts through thick, fibrous vegetables, smoothly cuts through citrus, and chops garlic with precision. And now I love the convenience of this set more than anything.
On the other hand, this cookware is the best I have ever used. Unlike other wooden spoons and spatulas I've used, it has a smooth, waxy finish that makes it easy to hand wash. We also like that it's made from sustainable wood (FSC-certified birch) and not treated with formaldehyde or VOCs (volatile organic compounds), according to the brand.
The Prep Set is recommended for those with limited counter space as well as those who value efficiency and streamlined design.
