A few months ago, I wrote about the 1964 Alaska earthquake. The only known earthquake stronger than that occurred in Chile on the same day four years earlier.
of 1960 Valdivia earthquake and tsunami (Spanish: Terremoto de Valdivia) or Chile earthquake (Gran Terremoto of Chile) The May 22, 1960 earthquake was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Various studies put it at 9.4 to 9.6 on the moment magnitude scale.[1] It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time) and lasted about 10 minutes. The resulting tsunami affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeastern Australia, and the Aleutian Islands.
The epicenter of the massive earthquake was near Lumaco, about 570 kilometers (350 miles) south of Santiago, and the city hardest hit was Valdivia. The shaking triggered local tsunamis, with waves of up to 25 meters (82 feet) hitting the Chilean coast with force. The main tsunami traveled across the Pacific Ocean, devastating Hilo, Hawaii, where waves as high as 10.7 meters (35 feet) were recorded more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) from the epicenter.
The death toll and financial losses from this widespread disaster are unclear.[6]Estimates of the total death toll from the earthquake and tsunami vary from 1,000 to 6,000.[5] Monetary costs estimated from various sources include: US$400 From $1 million to $800 a million[7] (or US$4.1 $1 billion to $8.2 billion $1 billion in 2023, adjusted for inflation.[8]
Fortunately, since 1900, there have only been five earthquakes of point 9 or higher.
