Below is an essay by Rodrigo Hanrichse.
“My friend Jorge “Tito” Vargas Rocha is a hero to me. He accepted me (a difficult person) for counseling and followed my advice for 15 years (he's a bit stubborn too). But I persisted and he is now a senior and has reaped the rewards. We lead by example and help each other. I even took him in for nine months after his house burned down. I consider him a brother. In his youth he was an excellent athlete (rowing, weightlifting, skiing, etc.), student (three careers in college), reader and architect. And he is the reason why I am learning French in my middle age. He went to Alliance Française as a child, was called “bonne homme” and went to Michigan, USA as an exchange student, where he also obtained his high school qualification. My hero!”
His French is better than my Spanish, but his English is good too (my French is so far so bad, but his English is better). I encourage him to practice his French by speaking French, listening to the radio, watching TV5 Monde and affiliates, buying books, etc. Trips to France are at our expense, but I take him to the countryside, museums, beaches and even the long bus trips to his childhood home of Port of Rebecca, three hours away. He deserves to be treated better, but he hasn't been trying as a senior lately. He is in great shape, though. My hero!”
Rodrigo's music of choice Cat Stevens' “Fathers and Sons” performed by the composer himself.
The quiz will be taking place again next week, on June 1st 2024. We'll talk then!
