FLINT, MI – A new culinary program at the Flint Farmers Market aims to bring culinary traditions back into everyday life.
The Mission Possible program aims to empower individuals by providing them with basic cooking skills and kitchen safety and nutritional knowledge delivered by trained chefs.
You can book now for a free one-day class for adults and children, with sessions split into age groups: 4-14, 15-18 and 19+.
A complete schedule of upcoming classes can be found on Mission Possible's Facebook page.
Janna Oliver, who manages the Mission Possible program, said event organizers aim to help local residents gain confidence in the kitchen.
“We started it because we realized a lot of people don't have basic kitchen skills,” she said.
Oliver hypothesized that social media may have led people to prefer eating out rather than working for themselves.
“We want to make sure you still have the skills you need to provide for your family,” Oliver said.
All chefs in this program are culinary school graduates with culinary and kitchen training. Classes begin with students learning kitchen rules and knife safety before they begin cooking.
The first girls' cooking class was held on April 11. “It was a great success,” Oliver said.
“There aren't many cooking classes where you can make steak for free.”
The classes are sponsored by Goyette Mechanical, Financial Plus and Flint Prints.
