A video of a roommate creating an unusual design for her kitchen cabinets has gone viral on TikTok.
The kitchen scene was captured in a TikTok video shared by Danick (@apollorising.dc), who did not provide his last name. Newsweek. The video has been viewed 4.9 million times since it was first posted on May 22nd.
The poster and his roommate have been friends since 2016 and live in Montreal, making music together full-time from their apartment and performing in a band called Apollo Rising.
“I can't believe my roommate did this,” reads the message overlaid on the video. The camera briefly shows his housemate Kudus “passed out” on the sofa, before panning to a kitchen cupboard that appears to be missing a door.
“One day while I was at work, Kudus got bored and decided to kill time by removing all the cupboard doors,” Danik said. Newsweek“It took my dad nearly three hours to finally throw the cupboard away. To this day, it's nowhere to be found. When I asked him why, he said he did it simply because he liked the 'vibe' of it.”
In the video, Danik asks, “Where are the cupboard doors?” to which Kudus replies, “It's open concept.”
Nearly three in five homeowners reported renovating or decorating their homes in 2022, and nearly half made repairs, according to a survey of 46,118 U.S. homeowners aged 18 and over conducted by home design website Houzz.
That same year, it was found that renovating interior spaces was the most popular, with homeowners tackling an average of about three interior projects at a time.
According to the survey, kitchen and bathroom remodels remain the most popular projects, with kitchens and master bathrooms having the highest average spend at $20,000 and $13,500, respectively.
“It's more spacious.”
“Hold on a second, I'll show you what you've done. Check this out,” Danick says in the latest clip as he points the camera at a kitchen cupboard.
In the clip, Kudus says “it's wider,” and the poster asks “for what?”, to which the housemate replies “I don't know, it's wider, what do you want?”
The poster reads, “We got the Shakespearean lamp through but what about the cupboard…we might need a cupboard for our scumbags…get me the cupboard,” and the video ends.
Danick said she and her roommate made a video about baking muffins when she was feeling down, which went viral and “piqued my curiosity about him,” so they started making TikTok videos together.
He said: “I came home from work one day and Kudus had bought an outdoor lamp and hung it in his room. People recognised our chemistry and banter so we started recording more of our daily interactions.”
The pranks played by the housemates in the viral video have sparked debate among TikTok users.
“He's soft chaos. The kind of guy who holds in a sneeze and then farts wet all over himself,” @vinagerandblackpeper said.
“Objectively, there isn't much more space,” Jordan Anthony Smith said.
User nullvoid11 said, “Without a door it just feels cluttered,” while Maroochi pointed out, “This only works for the most organized minimalists.”
Jke wrote: “I don't hate the look, but I don't love it either.”
