We never get tired of black and white kitchen color schemes, nor do we get tired of Nancy Meyers movies, which feature warm, romantic storylines and elegant interior design. This director's kitchen combines the two to stunning effect.
Myers' black and white kitchen idea could easily feature in her film. She designed the space with white cabinets and a white marble backsplash. The striking marble countertops stand out against the black wood planks of the kitchen island. It's a welcome change, as we're used to seeing islands and matching countertops. The silver hardware highlights everything from the chrome faucet to the stainless steel hood over the stove. This simple, monochromatic kitchen color scheme will stand the test of time.
The most notable feature of Myers' space is the white kitchen cabinets. “They are the foundation of the space,” says Digital Editor Jennifer Ebert. Homes and GardensShe continues, “The matte painted surfaces of the cabinets are perfectly simple and unadorned, allowing bold elements like the black island countertop and marble backsplash to stand out clearly.”
Jen is Editor (Digital) at Homes & Gardens and prior to this role she completed various interior design courses at KLC Design School and worked as an interiors writer for Ideal Home, LivingEtc, 25 Beautiful Homes and Country Homes & Interiors.
She continues, “Note that we mixed cabinet styles and featured glass fronts on some of the end cabinets. This decision adds visual interest to the cabinetry. It also allows more light into the space, allowing Myers to show off her most beautiful kitchen appliances.”
The mismatched planks on Meyers' countertops and kitchen island are another element that helps the room stand out more than a typical black-and-white kitchen. Ebert says, “Most kitchens have a continuity of countertops between the traditional countertops and the kitchen island. By subverting this pattern, Nancy Meyers immediately brought interest and originality to the space. Additionally, by placing a dark countertop in the middle of a space surrounded by white, Meyers draws our eye to the center of the room, making the white walls appear farther away and making the room appear larger.”
Finally, Myers' white-and-gray marble backsplash idea brings natural warmth and texture to her white kitchen. Ebert adds, “Marble is a timeless material that almost always lends itself to kitchen design. Its naturally occurring veining brings movement and a pleasing irregularity to an otherwise minimal, monochrome space.”
Black and White Kitchen Edit
Classics are classics for a reason, but that doesn't mean they can't be reinvented. Color schemes, even something as traditional as a black-and-white space, can always be reinterpreted. Look no further than Nancy Meyers' kitchen for proof.
