The University of Virginia Cavaliers' 2024-25 roster is starting to take shape, with Coach Mox continuing his recruiting streak by announcing the signing of promising high school recruit Camryn Kitchens on Wednesday.
Previously, 57Number Kitchen, ranked in the class of 2025 by ESPN HoopGurlz, has reclassified to the class of 2024 and is set to join the Hoos next season. Kitchen, a 5-foot-9 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, chose the University of Virginia from a long list of admissions offers that included Virginia Tech, Penn State, Illinois, Louisville and Marquette University.
Kitchens is a perfect fit for Virginia's fast-paced style and as a talented 3-point shooting prospect with a quick release, he could make an immediate impact despite a crowded Cavaliers backcourt.
A Charlotte native, Kitchen shot 42 percent from three-point range as a senior at Independence High School and set a team record by making 200 three-pointers in just three seasons. Kitchen was a two-time district player of the year at Independence and was named Southwestern 4A Player of the Year in 2023.
Kitchens, who competed for Team Curry on the AAU circuit, is also one of 14 players invited to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry's shooting camp in August 2023.
Kitchens can shoot the ball from long range, but he has more to offer than just the three-point shot.
“Cam is a high-integrity student-athlete who knows how to work hard on and off the court,” Mox said in a news release. “Cam has added so much versatility to his game over the past few years and will bring a new dynamic to our offense.”
Mox added Kitchens to a 2024 high school freshman recruiting class that already includes four-star forward Breonna Hurd, marking the second consecutive year the school has landed multiple four- or five-star prospects. In addition to the freshmen, Virginia was busy in the transfer portal in the offseason, landing University of North Carolina forward Riley Gray, University of Maryland center Hawa Doumbuya, Long Beach State guard Casey Valenti-Paea and University of Miami forward Latasha Lattimore.
With a returning core of extremely talented young guards Kimora Johnson, Paris Clark and Olivia McGehee, plus six new Cavaliers, Coach Mox has a roster that is ready to make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018.
