When the young family approached Austin design firm Alice Arterberry Arterbury Cook Danny Spears Captex Constructionthey were looking to transform a five-bedroom, five-bathroom house in Austin into their dream home, and they were clear about three things: it needed to feel cozy, warm and lived-in.
“We wanted the design to reflect a timeless, classic look,” says Alice, “something that would feel modern and fresh without feeling dated too quickly.”
The result? A home that “exudes sophistication and elegance, while being infused with the character and charm found throughout Austin homes,” she adds.
Here are 12 Home Decor Ideas I'm going to bookmark this design for future reference!
Arched hallway
“This home is quintessential Austin with a classic yet contemporary feel,” says Alice. Bucking trends, the design team decided to use neutral tones throughout the main floor and incorporate lots of natural wood beams that draw the eye upward. We love the arched hallway and woven art pieces that add a bit of flair to the neutral aesthetic.
Oversized windows
Oversized windows bring the outdoors in and the black iron frame gives the room architectural appeal. We also love this stone coffee table as a central gathering spot. Here's a similar look: West Elm Monty Coffee Table.
Cozy dining room
Imagine sitting around your dining table chatting all night while your guests get cozy. These cushioned dining chairs are the best. Try these similar looking ones. Kara upholstered armchair.
Moody Bar Area
Featuring dark walls and gold accents, this atmospheric bar area is a beautiful mix of Southern charm and unexpected layers and textures, Alice points out.Benjamin Moore Wrought IronA modern club chair makes you want to just sit back and relax.
Natural wood cabinet
This kitchen feels classy and bright without being too trendy.– The perfect clean environment for your growing family, easily customized with plants, cookbooks, ceramics and more.
Organizing the entire wall
This wall unit is perfect for families with small children, with hidden storage, matching baskets and frames for family photos. The reading wall light above is also a great addition. No kids? It's also perfect for collections like albums, books, office supplies and more.
Unique lighting
Adding a statement pendant to your bathroom is a great way to add unique décor without taking up too much space. This magnolia pendant is from Anthropologie, but is sold out. Magnolia Chandelier Achieve a similar look.
Bedroom fireplace
This master bedroom is a design goal. Now I wake up on Saturday mornings to a roaring fire in the fireplace. Favorite interior showThe natural wooden beams above the bed also enhance the design of the room.
Even better, there's a fireplace in the bathroom.
To create a cozy, warm, lived-in feel, Alice installed numerous fireplaces throughout the home, including one in the main bathroom, which Alice says is a rare find in Central Texas, and she's chalking this up to a life goal of one day having a fireplace in her bathroom (a girl can dream).
Outdoor kitchen and dining
The Austin home also has a great outdoor space, perfect for entertaining guests. Next to the spacious pool and spa, it has a full outdoor kitchen and an outdoor dining table with a waterfall trim. My budget might not be able to cover all of this (the median home price in California, where I live, is more than three times that of Austin), but I can still copy the idea of a cozy outdoor kitchen space where guests can relax, chat, or watch TV al fresco.
