Natural light pours into the sunroom, which opens onto a private backyard in a renovated Iowa City home. “Because this space is right next to the guest bedroom, we wanted it to be a cozy spot to curl up and read a book,” explains Andra Padilla, senior designer at Portland, Oregon-based Jessica Helgerson Interior Design. Warm white paint highlights the room's brightness, a floral Scandinavian flat-weave rug adds a rustic touch, and V-grooves from other areas of the house add texture. An antique-store find, a sofa from local Amana Colonies, has been reupholstered in a quilted fabric and finished off with pillows wrapped in BDDW textiles. “An antique rocking chair provides another comfortable seating spot,” says Padilla. “Vintage plant stands placed throughout the room bring in greenery at various heights.”
Raul Mollen's framed textile collages are among the latest works on display in the eclectic sunroom that Charlotte, North Carolina, resident Ashley Ross brought to life in a 1941 Charles C. Hartman-designed home in Greensboro's Irving Park neighborhood. Wanting to pay homage to this history, Ross, founder and principal of Muse Noir Interiors, paired the space with a 1930s Indolci Harabarra lamp, an early 20th-century swivel chair refurbished by Schwung Home, and vintage snowshoes behind the bar that, in her words, evoke “vacations past.” Keen to create an atmosphere evocative of “adventures past,” Ross curated an eclectic collection of pieces from around the world, from Swedish stools covered in Moroccan rugs to Czech chairs flanking the piano and folding fans from Bali. “We wanted to keep the space light and airy, and didn't want to sacrifice our signature Muse Noire tactility, so we used bouclé, grasscloth, leather, metal and wood,” adds Ross.
When Scottsdale firm The Refined Group designed a south-facing, open-air retreat in a French minimalist-style new build in Paradise Valley, protection from the scorching Arizona sun guided every decision. “We wanted to create a space where friends and family could lounge under the shade, but it would also serve as a backdrop and dance floor for our backyard weddings and many soirees,” says owner and lead designer Dana Lyon. Durable marine fabrics cover the custom sofa, and “the organic teak console table will outlast us all and patina over time in the most beautiful way.” Surrounded by striking landscaping by Scottsdale's Refined Gardens, the space is welcoming year-round and features a custom ottoman and gas fireplace for breezy evenings.
