Create a buzz
Wetrooms have become increasingly popular in the world of bathroom design, with homeowners drawn to their convenience and aesthetics, but they are not without their quirks. Citydeskstudio has experience mastering the art of wetroom design, so they are familiar with both the pros and cons of the concept. According to Ben Orth, Principal at Citydeskstudio, “Wetrooms are a great way to create a comfortable, cozy space that's perfect for a home or office.” [they’re] “Waterproofing also has implications on its construction,” he says. But he also notes its luxury side: “It's nice to be able to move between areas without worrying about splashes.” Boasting fluidity in design, he explains, wetrooms aren't restricted to clear boundaries or perimeters of the bathroom. “This is evident in the lack of thresholds or curbs, continuous tile and reduced need for enclosures. [and] The same goes for how the light is blocked because there are fewer edges.” –Elizabeth Rubik
Pulse of Vanity
Designers are moving away from boring, basic ceramic sinks in master and powder room bathrooms. Instead, these functional items are taking on the feel of custom furniture with unique details, warm underlighting, and decorative hardware. For example, the master bathroom vanity set in this 1929 French Provincial home by Rehkamp Larson Architects, Alecia Stevens Interiors, and Welch Forsman Associates features a Brescia Capraia marble top and apron supported by custom brass legs and flanked by tall, patterned birch veneer storage cabinets. Going for a more rustic look? Ditch the vanity altogether and try a trough-style sink. –Caitlin Bloomquist
The endurance of spa aesthetics
Spa-inspired bathrooms are moving away from the clean whites and jewel tones of a few years ago and instead going darker with earthy tones, dramatic patterns, and drapes. But the love affair with freestanding bathtubs remains strong, as seen in this European-inspired master suite by Codie Donahue Interior Design. The bathroom comes with a walk-in rain shower, en suite toilet, and marble flooring, bringing the spa feel right from the comfort of your own home. –Elizabeth Rubik
