No matter the size or style of our home, we all want to create beautiful and functional interiors. But small design and styling mistakes can mean your space isn't living up to its full potential. Here are 3 common interior design mistakes and how to fix them.
Mistake #1: Ignoring scale and proportions
A common mistake in interior design is not considering the scale and proportion of furniture, but paying attention to these details can help you create a space that is both visually beautiful and practical for everyday life.
For example, oversized furniture in a small space can make the room feel cramped, while small furniture in a large room can feel underwhelming. Being honest with yourself about what you really need in terms of furniture can help you prioritize pieces that fit. Also, consider ceiling heights and window size when choosing your furniture to ensure the right balance and proportions.
Daniel Ufland, co-founder of online interior styling platform Flitch, says: “When designing a living space, it's important to consider factors such as scale, proportion and functionality. These elements not only contribute to the overall aesthetic of the space, but also influence its comfort and usability.”
Mistake #2: Ignoring functionality
Another common mistake is prioritizing aesthetics over functionality. It is important that a space is visually appealing, but it must respond to our needs and lifestyle. Interior design is not just about making a space look beautiful, it is about creating an environment that enriches our lives.
“When designing a room, think about how it will be used on a daily basis – consider factors like foot traffic, storage needs and the activities that will take place in the space,” says Daniel.
Do you work from home? Consider your office or desk space. Do you like to cook elaborate dishes? Design a countertop with enough space for you to experiment. And if you have a busy household (especially one with small children and pets), choosing durable furniture is a must.
If you're short on space, opt for multi-functional pieces, such as furniture that can double as hidden storage, so you can get the most for your money. and Make the most of your space without compromising your style!
Mistake 3: Overlooking the importance of lighting
Repeat with us: never overlook the importance of lighting. Lighting is an often underestimated feature, but insufficient lighting can make a room feel dark and gloomy, while too much light can cause glare and discomfort.
To get the most out of your lighting, think about three things: what your daily routine is like, what you want to highlight in your home, and the atmosphere you want to create. If you love curling up to read, you'll need plenty of table and floor lamps (especially those that can be adjusted). If you have a painting hanging but it's not showing off the best, some thoughtful lighting can brighten the area and draw the eye to it. And if you want to create a cozy atmosphere, try tiering your lighting instead of relying solely on overhead lighting.
'“Incorporate a variety of lighting sources into your space to create mood and functionality,” suggests Daniel. “This can include overhead lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Consider the levels of natural light in the room and supplement with artificial lighting where necessary. Dimmer switches are also a great addition, as they allow you to adjust lighting levels for different activities and moods.”
