When you hear the words '80s decor, it's understandable that you might balk.
50s or 60s decor? Yes, midcentury. 70s? Iconic orange decor.
Imagine an 80s interior (disclaimer: I have no personal experience of this decade). Wall Street, The main character, Bud, follows the instructions of Daryl Hannah's Darian to adapt his New York apartment to his lavish lifestyle. The result is exposed stapled brick, dingy blue walls, Greek columns, gold and silver leaf, and, oh my, art that's just not my thing. Words can't really describe it, that's what I'm trying to say. (The visuals are good, but the soundtrack is flawless.)
Needless to say, it left an indelible impression. But recently, I came across the Instagram account “The 80s Interior” and realized that, like every era, the '80s has its own nuances. Indeed, the fact that everything was shot on film before the '90s gives it a huge aesthetic advantage. The grain of its warm hues plays a big part in our vintage nostalgia. But –
80s interiors seem to suggest that we've overlooked this decade as a source of interior inspiration.
80s Interior has actually been around for quite some time now: London-based retail manager Simon Knight launched the account in 2017, but it's now grown so popular that it has an entire range of logos, bags and t-shirts.
Thanks to Knight's perspective, the '80s interiors are certainly a beautiful representation of the era, with exposed brick, no staples, and plenty of bright, geometrically arranged spaces.
As a minimalist in aesthetic (and one who strives to be in other ways), the best thing about '80s decor is that it reminds me to have fun, and even in the world of jute rugs and Cesca chairs (no offense, they're great chairs), there's still room for experimentation.
Below are some of the design lessons we are taking:
You can also arrange the rooms around the bathroom.
If this year has taught us anything, it's that, whenever possible, our homes should be optimized for leisure. (Note also the point about plants below.)
Platform bed: Yes
Whether you're inspired by the '80s, Cycladic, Scandinavian or Japanese interior design, a platform bed is the perfect choice.
The right plants can transform a room
Especially in a minimalist bathroom situation.
Minimal + 80s is a great combo

Also, Apple's aesthetics have always been enviable.
And for home decor inspiration, I'll share some other decor accounts I'm currently following, as well as some of my favorite places to find vintage furniture. Want to discuss this further? The question I want to ask is: is lifestyle the new fashion?
