Le Petite Gourmet Shop, a cookware store in La Grange Square, is hosting a summer program called “Kids and the Kitchen,” where children between the ages of 5 and 12 can learn to cook.
The theme of the class on Friday, June 7, was “Everything Bite-Sized,” and participants learned how to make mini lasagnas, pizza bites and s'mores bites. The instructor was Landon Von Minden, a recent graduate of La Grange High School.
Landon teaches this class because he enjoys interacting with kids and he loves knowing the kids are having a good time.
This is Landon's second year teaching at Le Petite, and he plans to continue teaching classes through the rest of the summer. When asked what the biggest challenge is in teaching younger students how to cook, Landon's answer is time management.
“It can be hard to get meals ready on time,” he says. “Parents have to be careful not to wait too long, so kids don't get bored.”
But teaching comes with rewards.
“It's really gratifying to see them having fun and getting used to the activities they're doing,” he said.
Landon has been teaching at Le Petite for two years and plans to continue classes through the summer.
Participant Braley said, “I like going to this class because I get to hang out with my friend Elise.”
When I asked her what her favorite thing she made in class was her Italian soda.
Vincent Shaw said he liked his teacher because “he explained everything very clearly and was very kind.”
