GLENVILLE, Ga. — One inmate and one Smith State Corrections employee were killed in a shooting Sunday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC).
At about 4:40 a.m., inmate Jaidrex Hart shot and killed an Aramark Food Services employee working in the kitchen, police said.
The employee was later confirmed dead.
Hart then shot himself and was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The weapon used is in the custody of the GDC, which is investigating what led to the shooting.
GDC special agents are responding and providing personnel support to the facility.
Hart was serving a 20-year sentence for manslaughter in Carroll County. His maximum release date was June 2043.
GDC said it would provide a further update once details are confirmed.
