An inmate at a Georgia prison shot and killed a food service worker on Sunday, then shot and killed himself, authorities said.
Jaedrex Hart, 34, was serving a 20-year sentence at Smith State Prison for intentional homicide and aggravated assault. Hart shot and killed Orleon Shabea Grace, 24, before turning the gun on himself and later dying. The Georgia Department of Corrections is still investigating how Hart obtained the gun.
“The weapon is now in the custody of GDC and a full and thorough investigation will be carried out into the circumstances that led to this tragic incident,” police said. Washington Examiner“GDC Special Agents are responding and providing personnel support to the facility.”
Grace was an Aramark employee and had been working at the prison since January.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our colleague and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family,” Aramark spokeswoman Debbie Albert said. Washington Examiner“This is a tragedy for all of us, and we are cooperating with the Georgia Department of Health in their investigation.”

Hart has been incarcerated since 2015 and his earliest possible release is 2043.
Last year, Smith State Prison reported the death of corrections officer Robert Clark, 42. Inmate Leighton Lester reportedly attacked Clark in the back with a homemade weapon while also wounding another inmate. In addition to his murder conviction, Lester faces additional charges in the attack.
