Washington and Lee University’s Campus Kitchen (CKWL) has received $2,300 from the Food Lion Feed Charitable Foundation. The grant will support the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program’s continued efforts to provide meals to neighbors in need and support families in Rockbridge County.
“With more families turning to food agencies locally and across the country, it's more important than ever that we continue programs like the Backpack Program to supplement food costs for local families with school-aged children,” said CKWL Coordinator Ryan Brink. “We're pleased that Food Lion Feed Foundation continues to support the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program as we work to meet the needs of our community.”
Founded in 2009 to address food insecurity experienced by children receiving free and reduced lunches in schools throughout Rockbridge County, the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program provides weekly packages of non-perishable breakfast, lunch and snacks to children enrolled in area schools. Funds from the Food Lion Feed Charitable Foundation help purchase food for the program. Currently, the program distributes 650 backpacks each week to preschool, elementary and middle school students in local school districts.
