BAKER — A Baker woman says she hired a contractor to work on her kitchen but the job was never finished. Monique Wright is seeking a refund.
When you walk into Wright's kitchen, the first thing you'll notice is the peeling floor and missing cabinetry. There's a foot-deep groove running from the wall to the sink. Wright had to hire someone to dig out the broken pipe in the slab and replace it with a new one.
A project that was supposed to take two days is now in its third week.
“He disappeared over Father's Day weekend,” she said.
Wright has filed a lawsuit and said she has paid $7,800 so far. The plumbing is still the same, the kitchen is a mess, and the countertop broke into several pieces while removing the cabinets, and now lies in a rubbish pile near the road.
“I don't know what to do because I can't leave my kids here like this,” Wright said.
After learning the contractor was not insured or had a permit to work, Wright is demanding a refund.
“We're now over $7,800 in the red because we have to repair everything that was demolished,” she said.
Despite all the chaos in her life, Wright seemed calm Tuesday afternoon. She said she's had time to process what's going on and just wants the problem resolved. If she gets a refund, she can hire someone else to do the work.
2 On Your Side spoke with the contractor on Tuesday. He has agreed to reimburse Wright, so his name is being withheld in this story. This story will be updated if the funds are not disbursed.
