Lighting is essential when it comes to setting the mood of a room, and while there are many factors that go into successfully lighting a space, from wattage to fixtures, it's safe to say we're all drawn to the traditional appeal of a wall sconce.
This preference was solidified by photos of Katherine Heigl's home, which is outfitted with antique-style light fixtures. 27 Dress and pregnant Star brass sconces brighten the kitchen and balance the contemporary look while adding a vintage feel to a modern white space.
According to experts, when brainstorming lighting ideas, it's important to first and foremost prioritize sconces (or alternative light fixtures/lamps) that will blend seamlessly with the room's existing design.
“It's all about choosing a design that maximizes impact, ensures functionality, and complements the overall aesthetic of the home,” says Mara Lipacek Miller, founder of Industville . “Consider architectural features and the era of the building's design. For example, bulkhead lights add character and an appealing rugged feel to a contemporary space.”
The next factor to consider when choosing the right lighting for your home is the material the fixture is made of. While sconces can be made from a variety of materials, from durable materials like wood and stone to delicate materials like glass, there are certain materials Rypacek Miller recommends in particular.
“Choose recycled materials like brass,” she says. “Not only is it a sustainable choice, but over time brass will develop a patina, lending timeless style and vintage character to any space.”
Alternatively, gold or silver sconce lighting, with their natural elegance and luster, are perfect for more modern spaces, although these materials look just as great when paired with more rustic home details.
Finally, the placement of the sconce is also important to the look and feel of the lighting in a room, and I like that the Heigl lights, although a little higher, are much closer to the feel of the room than a typical ceiling lamp or pot light.
“Strategically placing wall lights to highlight certain areas, like cooking or seating areas, not only increases functionality but also creates a warm, cozy atmosphere well into the evening,” explains Lipacek Miller. “However, it's important to pay attention to the height and placement of the lights to avoid glare and ensure adequate lighting.”
