On June 25, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that more than 21 million Miniverse “Make It Mini” sets from California-based toy manufacturer MGA Entertainment are being recalled because they contain a potentially hazardous resin.
In liquid form, resin can cause skin, eye and respiratory tract irritation and sensitivity if inhaled, contacted or ingested.
The resin contains amounts of acrylates prohibited by federal hazardous substances law from being used in children's products, but the CPSC said the resin is not hazardous once it changes from a liquid to a solid.
According to the CPSC, MGA Entertainment, which also owns toy brands such as LOL Surprise and Little Tikes, has received 26 reports of children and adults suffering from injuries from its toys, including skin burns and irritation, respiratory irritation and, in one case, a consumer developed asthma after coming into contact with one of its toys.
More than 21 million toys were recalled in the United States and about 1 million in Canada.
The recalled toy sets include all models and series of “Make It Mini Appliances,” as well as “Make It Mini Food” and “Make It Mini Lifestyle.”
Many of the sets are packaged in spheres containing the materials needed to assemble the intended miniature imitation “appliance,” “food,” or “lifestyle” item.
The CPSC noted that the resin packaging in each toy set may mimic food products, such as a peanut butter jar, maple syrup bottle or milk carton, and that the resin mimics food products when it hardens.
The toys will be available from October 2022 through June 2024 in stores nationwide, including Target, Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Aldi and Hobby Lobby, as well as online at Amazon.com.
The toys ranged in price from $7 to $13 for individual sets and $14 to $52 for boxed sets.
Consumers are advised to immediately discontinue use of the toy and contact MGA Entertainment to receive a prepaid label to return either (a) the entire product, including any unused resin, if the product is unopened, or (b) the unused resin and a photograph of the product, if the product has been opened.
Consumers can choose to receive a full refund or a replacement item.
