A Charlottesville restaurant chain is expanding its presence in the Richmond area with its first expansion into Chesterfield County.
Roots Natural Kitchen plans to open a new branch at 14207 Winterview Parkway in the Winterfield Crossing development, according to a permit recently filed with Midlothian County.
The restaurant will occupy a 3,000-square-foot space in the same building that currently houses a Jersey Mike's Subs and faces Midlothian Turnpike.
This will be Roots' third location in the Richmond area. The first opened at 939 W. Grace St. in the city in 2018. The second opened in 2021 at 6602 W. Broad St. near Reynolds Crossing in Henrico.
No details about the Winterfield Crossing expansion plan, such as a planned opening date, are available. Roots did not respond to a request for comment.
A building permit received by Chesterfield this week listed the Roots tenant renovations at the Winterview Parkway space at an estimated cost of $600,000.
Roots has 13 locations, most of which are in Virginia, according to its website. The company also has restaurants in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Ohio, North Carolina and Maryland. University of Virginia graduates Alberto Nammu and Alvaro Anspach founded Roots in Charlottesville in 2015.
Roots' menu features grain- and veggie-based bowls with ingredients like grilled chicken, barbecued tofu and mushrooms. Bowls at the Richmond location cost around $12 to $14.
Also planned for Winterfield Crossing are vegan bakery Cinnaholic and Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls, both of which are expected to open soon.
Grocery store Aldi and co-working chain Gather are anchor stores at Winterfield Crossing, whose tenants include Wong's Tacos, Virginia Credit Union and brewery Triple Crossing. Carytown Bicycle Co. recently moved out of the shopping center.
