Though it's a color that comes in and out of style, there's one color we just can't get enough of since it entered the trend world earlier this year: the Unexpected Red Theory has been all the rage on the internet, with many speculating that having a red statement piece in your space will always look good, regardless of the room's existing tones.
Minka Kelly's Instagram page offers another example of this being true. Friday Night Lights The star shared a video shot in her '70s-inspired wooden kitchen, and our eyes immediately fell on the cherry red chair against the wall. The rest of the room has a warm, rustic feel, favoring neutral colors, but the red accents add a pop of color.
A bold, can't-miss color, red is sure to grab attention, so you can use some unexpected red theories to really elevate your white or neutral kitchen.
“When used as a focal point in the kitchen, it becomes an instant focal point, drawing the eye and enlivening the space,” says designer Nina Lichtenstein. “Whether it's a striking backsplash, bar stools or bold appliances, red elements can break the monotony of neutral tones and add a dynamic layer of visual interest. This pop of color not only enhances aesthetic appeal, but also reflects boldness and personality, making the kitchen feel more distinctive and vibrant.”
With that in mind, if you're new to using red in the kitchen, Lichtenstein says it's best to start with small accents.
“Consider a set of red cookware and tableware or vibrant red containers,” she suggests. “These small elements can bring in color without overwhelming the space. To avoid an overwhelming effect, use red as an accent rather than a primary color. A red range hood, a set of red pendant lights, or even a single wall painted red can add a desirable pop without overwhelming the senses.”

Finally, while the unexpected red theory has an underlying theme of playfulness and fun, Lichtenstein recommends prioritizing practical red kitchen furniture and accessories over items that function solely as décor.
“In the kitchen, functionality is key,” she adds. “Make sure your red statement piece isn't just beautiful to look at, but also practical – a red bar stool or a red refrigerator, for example, can combine style and practicality, enhancing both the form and function of the space.” This has inspired us to try out this color trend to see how it works in our kitchens.
