review – I was spoiled with an automatic can opener as a kid, but after leaving home and using it a few times, I never really had one that I wanted to keep on hand. I thought the Orbit One Cordless Professional Powerful Can Opener from Kitchen Mama was worth a try, as it's a small, plug-free automatic can opener. It's better than a manual can opener, right?
what is that?
The Kitchen Mama Orbit One Can Opener is a portable, rechargeable can opener that works with the push of a button.
What's included?
- Rechargeable can opener
- USB-C Cable
- Storage box
- Cylinder Blade
- Blade Driver
- operating instructions
Design and Features
First, I had to fully charge the Orbit One can opener, so I used the included USB-C cable and let it fully charge for a few hours. While it's charging, a red light will come on. When it's fully charged, the red light will go out. After a month of use, it took me a few hours to fully charge the Orbit One, and it never ran out of battery in that time.
I used the screwdriver that came with it to make sure the blade was tight. It's really convenient to have everything in the case for when you need it. I've never had to replace a blade, but having the case right there makes it much less likely you'll lose something.
The case itself is made of hard plastic and has space for each accessory, with the Orbit One can opener resting on top. Everything fits in easily, including the charging cable. It doesn't have a latch to close it, but it seems to stay closed just fine when you toss it in its place in a kitchen drawer.
Next, I planned my meals so that I could use the Orbit One as much as possible, which happened to be chicken enchilada soup. I also bought some canned fruit. The size and shape of the can didn't matter, so I started by using the Orbit One to open a small can of green chili peppers. I was very impressed with how it cut without a hitch. I positioned it just right, pressed the big button on top, and it automatically moved into place and started cutting.
Once finished, I had to pry the “lid” off a bit to open the can – the Orbit One got through with no problem, but the can itself had something on it that seemed to hold it closed – not all cans had that, and the enchilada sauce was so easy to open that the weight of the can opener and the little magnet at the bottom caused the lid to pop off.
What I really like is that there are no sharp edges after you remove the lid, and it's cut so that you can put the lid back on and use it as a lid if you don't finish the whole can of pears in one go and need to put them back in the fridge. The Orbit One doesn't touch the contents like the manual ones I've used in the past, so they stayed pretty clean every time I opened them.
Cooking is easy with just the push of a button, which I appreciated. I opened all the cans and placed them somewhere safe on the counter, then put them in one by one. With my old automatic can opener, I had to be careful with the lids every time, so I had to deal with each can every time I opened it. It's nice to have it ready and ready to go when I need it.

Final thoughts
Overall, the ease of use and compact size are what really appealed to me about the Kitchen Mama Orbit One Can Opener. While some brands were a little trickier to open, I was able to open all of them in one try. It's super easy to just place the can opener on top of the can, press the button to move on to the next part of the recipe, and then return to the can you're opening. The Kitchen Mama Orbit One Can Opener has made cooking a little easier, and I'll definitely keep using it in the future.
