Many designers and industry experts predict that we will see more eye-catching hardware on kitchen cabinets as this trend starts to gain traction. Instead of focusing solely on functionality, mixed materials, bold shapes, colors, textures, and antique or vintage knobs, handles, and pulls are expected to become popular as homeowners look to add personality and uniqueness to their kitchens. However, HGTV's Hilary Farr isn't a fan of this trend. Eye-catching hardware is one feature she will absolutely avoid in her kitchen. Farr's disdain for the trend is because she believes that rather than adding visual interest, the feature distracts from the overall visual appeal and harmony of the room.
In an interview with Apartment Therapy, she said, “I rarely have visible hardware in my kitchen because it's distracting, especially in an open concept.” She also said that homeowners should opt for “thin, very linear hardware that blends with the cabinetry.” This choice makes sense for a designer, since Hilary Farr's actual kitchen is completely devoid of hardware. And Farr doesn't follow trends in her designs, preferring timeless cabinetry. This design approach certainly works well for the award-winning designer, whose advice is highly valued and whose signature style is beloved by legions of fans. But for others, this is an example of what Hilary Farr gets all wrong.
