When it comes to expert interior design advice, you can count on Nate Berkus. Known for his clean, modern design style, the celebrity interior designer regularly takes to Instagram to share decor inspiration and practical styling tips for every room in your home.
A recent post by a designer shown below has brought us to know about kitchen tile ideas, specifically the use of subway tiles.
In the post's caption, Berkus praised the use of subway tile in her kitchen, calling it a “timeless material” and also a very practical choice that's “really easy to keep clean.”
Whether you use tiles throughout your entire kitchen or just as a backsplash idea, tiles are a classic option that will give your home an understated, clean look while fitting into a wide range of design styles, from farmhouse decor ideas to minimalist décor.
As Berkus shows, we are also starting to see more creative ways to incorporate classic tiles into kitchens, such as using them as kitchen ceiling ideas, which you can see in the third slide of Berkus' post.
We asked design experts for their thoughts on using subway tile in the kitchen. Interior designer Jessica Bagwell explains: “Subway tile is a popular and timeless choice for kitchens because of its versatility, affordability and durability. It can be installed in a variety of patterns and suits both traditional and contemporary designs.”
When choosing subway tile for your kitchen, it's also important to consider how you'll install it. There are many different ways you can lay out the tiles. Interior designer Debbie DeMarais explains: “Opting for a vertically stacked installation adds a subtle, modern twist. Not only does this approach add visual depth, it's particularly effective at making small spaces appear taller, making them more appealing when installed under cabinets.”
You can also try subway tiles in different colours to vary from the classic white, such as the dark green shade pictured above. By opting for texture variations, you can also incorporate some of 2023's key tile trends.
Demarais also suggests choosing a contrasting grout color for added visual interest. “When working with subway tile, don't underestimate the impact of grout color. Choosing a contrasting color can create a striking geometric pattern, while choosing a tone that matches your tile will result in a more harmonious, seamless look.”
