I'm Russell Kjellberg, a local reporter in St. John's. Local kitchens have been serving the community for years, but thanks to a new grant, they're set to have an even bigger impact.
“It seems simple, but it's just lunch,” said the Rev. Jim Pearl of St. John's Lutheran Church.
This is the story of St. John's Lutheran Church's Good News Kitchen, which we shared with you earlier this year.
“Every Tuesday we provide 250 lunches to anyone who wants them,” Pearl said.
Beginning in 2022, the church began providing lunches to those in need, no questions asked, and while that effort is still ongoing, a recommendation from Suntree Apartments will soon see them providing lunches twice a week.
“About two and a half months ago we started delivering Good News Kitchen lunches to our residents, and they loved the program and recommended us for this grant,” Pearl said.
The award from Glick Philanthropies provided the kitchen with $10,000 as part of a relief fund, which philanthropy director Ben Grande said helps many organizations like the kitchen.
“Our collaboration with the Glick Community Relief Fund allows us to support 84 organizations that are making meaningful contributions to communities, families and individuals across the country.”
Pearl said the grant will not only help them provide more lunches but also create more memories through the program, especially at Suntree.
“People wait in the common areas and often eat together, so they're socializing and having conversations instead of just having lunch and going back to their apartments. To me, that's a huge bonus. It's a blessing,” Pearl said.
The grant will help provide more than 500 lunches each week starting in September.
