Photographer Michael Hull has captured many New York moments over the years, but his favourite people are Broadway legends. Find out who they are as told by the residents of Hell's Kitchen in their own version of West Side Story…
So what is your New York story? Were you born here or are you a recent arrival?
I'm originally from Long Island, but I've been a city kid for as long as I can remember, and my parents were very trusting people who, as soon as we discovered trains, allowed me to go to Manhattan to see Broadway shows and attend other events.
What was your first job and what are you doing now?
My first job in NYC was as a barista at Starbucks. It only lasted 6 hours, and I just didn't have the capacity for it. I've had a few jobs now, but for the past 12 years I've been a photographer shooting everywhere from Broadway to Brooklyn. I also collaborate frequently with the folks at the Times Square Alliance, so I'm often in the square for public art events, installations, New Year's Eve, etc.
what'What's your favorite moment in New York so far?
It was November 2021, and I grabbed my camera bag and headed into the heart of Times Square. Stephen Sondheim had just died, and members of the theater community were planning to remember him with song. Sunday From his show Sunday in the Park with George.
Broadway had just reopened after a short closure, and for many of us, this was our first opportunity to see each other face-to-face. There were hundreds of people there: old friends, Broadway legends. The energy was at its peak. As the plaza filled, I ducked under the TV cameras and positioned myself right next to my friend Michael J. Moritz Jr., who was directing the choir. As I stood with my back to the crowd and facing the choir, I noticed Lynn standing directly in front of me, waiting for her cue to speak. Realizing that I was in the way, I asked her if she wanted to take her place, and we ended up in the perfect spot to take this photo. It was a beautiful morning full of reunion and joy after such a tragic loss.
Tell me why you like Hell.'kitchen
I can't imagine living anywhere else! I was surprised at how Hell's Kitchen truly feels like its own little neighborhood, just a few blocks from the heart of Times Square. I love that it's centrally located and close to the theater, but I also love that I get to know so many of my neighbors and local small businesses.
What is your super power or hidden talent?
Kill houseplants.
Michael's favorite place in Hell's Kitchen
Verse — 714 9th Avenue (intersecting W48/49th St)
Hell's Kitchen is home to some of Manhattan's most popular gay/queer bars, and VERS is one of my favorites. It's queer-owned, has great staff, and I love to support them (it's so important to know where your money is going…). Plus, it's always fun: there are drag shows almost every night, a piano bar, TV viewing, DJ sets, and the best food and drink happy hour in Hong Kong.
Holdfast Kitchen and Spirits — 364 W46th Street (bordering 8th/9th Ave)
If you're looking for a cozy place to share secrets over a smoked Old Fashioned, this is the place for you. The Christmas lights that are up all year round give it a cozy feel, and the walls are plastered with Broadway show posters autographed by many of the performers who've spent time here. It's also the place to go when you don't want to think about brunch – the biscuits alone are worth the trip.
Dickens — 783 8th Avenue (intersecting W47th/48th St)
Another great queer spot with great staff and a cute rooftop patio. Be sure to relieve yourself on the second floor, where there are four restrooms themed after Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia. Thanks to Brian, one of the owners, for always creating a great atmosphere.
TJ Maxx — 250 W57th Street (bordering 7th/8th Ave)
That's right…TJ Maxx.
Kashkaval Gardens — 852 9th Avenue (intersecting W55/56th St)
This place is a neighborhood staple; I order the kale salad and happy hour wine, but many people order the specialty fondue or other tapas. As far as I know, it's one of the few places in the neighborhood that's been around as long as I have (it's changed locations once along the way). The four-seat table by the front window is the spotlight.
Delphinium Home — 353 W47th St (adjacent to 9th/10th Ave)
It's a treasure trove of trinkets, decor and knick-knacks that make me so happy. It's my go-to place for last-minute gifts, cards for any occasion and other knick-knacks I didn't know I needed.
