We've heard a lot about the Apple Watch saving lives, but we don't hear much about the HomePod or HomePod mini saving lives. But thankfully, Apple's smart speaker stepped up to the plate when a kitchen fire could have turned catastrophic.
A fire broke out in a kitchen after a “curious” dog reportedly accidentally turned on the oven, which happened to have a cardboard box on it – resulting in, you guessed it, a massive conflagration.
However, Apple HomePod came to the rescue by alerting homeowners to the fire via push notification, giving them time to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived.
Stay Vigilant
A Facebook post from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, first spotted by 9to5Mac, details that the homeowner “waked up to his Apple HomePod sending a 'high temperature' notification.”
However, it's most likely that a HomePod heard a fire alarm in the house and alerted the homeowner as a result. While a HomePod can't act as a smoke alarm itself, it can listen for existing smoke alarms in the home and send a push notification to your iPhone if an alarm goes off. You can enable HomePod Alarm Awareness on a HomePod, HomePod 2, or HomePod mini.
As this example shows, turning on this feature could save your home and possibly even your life.
